The disc between the vertebrae perform its roll as a shock absorber very efficiently as long as it is watertight. Unfortunately, due to the aging process and/or excessive “wear and tear,” the disc may partially lose this property; i.e., cracks develop in the annulas through which the fluid of the nucleus can escape. This condition is called, a herniated or protruded disc. The gelatinous content of the disc escapes upon bending through the nucleus cracks and may compress the nerve root which exits from the Lumbar region and results in chronic Lumbar back pain. It is preferable to avoid bending in any type of exercises especially forward bending-toe touching in yoga exercises, either from standing, sitting or back bending position.
